TEAM SKILLS FOR BUSINESS PERFORMANCE

Sir John Harvey Jones Making It Happen (1988)

“Almost invariably businessmen seek to go into action far too early - before they have actually discussed, analysed and decided what they are going to do”

Got a new team to manage?

Need to raise performance standards at work?

Faced with big challenges that your team MUST achieve?

Want to integrate new staff to gain from their fresh perspective?

Need to pull together to make it work again after job losses?

Define and agree the important tasks

Work towards common goals with shared purpose

Allocate work based on who’s good at what - and on who needs to develop skills

Encourage creative thinking and innovative solutions within the bounds of getting the job done

Have a plan and know when it is and isn’t working, so you can all do something about it

Team skills can bring about a step change in performance to your business

If you feel you need to become more skilled before you develop your team, take a look at our distance learning programme, People Skills for Technical Managers

CASE STUDY:

WORKSHOP FOR SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS AND MANAGERS

A one-day workshop where participants applied the Thought into Action SystemTM for getting things done with others. We used fun activities to highlight the key lessons, which they then related to their own work issues. For some, this meant the staff they manage while for others, it was more relevant to customer and supplier relationships.

CASE STUDY:

PRINTING WORKS

CUSTOMER SERVICE FOR ENGINEERS

Becoming customer-focused meant the engineering team needed to communicate more effectively with the printers to solve top priority problems first and carry out routine maintenance on critical machinery. The entire engineering team learned to apply the Thought into Action SystemTM though a series of workshops held on site.

“I enjoyed being stretched and taken out of my business comfort zone and working through the tasks – being aware of and curbing my controlling tendencies. I gained an insight into others’ work practices and mind sets.” GM

“I expected it to be well organised and well delivered and it was! Thank you. The tasks were a clever choice of ‘neutral’ activities that built up over the day. Good facilitation with useful models outlined.” CS

“A stimulating and interesting approach to planning and reviewing. The activities were very varied and encouraged interaction well. An excellent event, thought-provoking and fun.” CM

Understand your customer’s needs

“All projects need to have aims defined. Planning is a key aspect of project management. Review is extremely important during the running of the project and also at the end.”

- Quality Manager

“It is important to get a good understanding of what is required. The feedback in reviewing was always constructive.”

- Technician

“Really covered aims well and this helped with planning. The review process was developed well; our integration got better during the course.”

- Engineering Manager
